Benebone Review

Either it’s edible or Mugsy looses interest in it after the novelty wears off in the first two days. Benebones are not edible, I didn’t have high hopes for this chew toy going in, but Mugsy is going through his second puppy teething phase. The store I was shopping in had it, and well needless to say Mugsy now has a Benebone.

Immediately Mugsy’s interest in the bone was minimal. I had to toss it around a bit for him to begin to show any anticipation to receive this toy. Once he did realize it was for him he settled down to chew. Mugsy will settle down to chew on anything, mostly he will chew on things I am fond of and are not meant to be chewed on. My favorite tennis shoes, and socks come to mind.

After about thirty minutes of chewing he stands up, I cringe in anticipation of this becoming another paper weight. He swoops down and grips the Benebone bringing it to another room with him. This is Success.

I am glad to say Mugsy’s interest in the Benebone hasn’t wavered in the two weeks we’ve had it. Mugsy still catches sight of it pounces to it and settles down to enjoy his toy.

A benebone is a wishbone shaped Nylon dog chew flavored with natural flavors such as bacon (made with real bacon) Peanut butter (Made with real peanuts) And chicken (can you guess what flavors it? …Yep, That is right! chicken.) The flavor should last as long as the chew due to it being infused throughout the entire Nylon treat.

Mugsy seems to think it is still pretty tasty!  I Like that Mugsy hasn’t lost interest in the chew. It gives me more time to myself and a new distraction to redirect unwanted chewing onto.

My biggest complaint about the chew is that it quickly became worn on the edges. Not too worn to use, but worn enough to collect some dog hair on the edges.  I hope this wear suggests that my dog is less likely to break his teeth on it.

Yuck worn edges!

The chewing  of any toy or treat should be monitored. The Benebone is not an edible chew so once the bone is displaying damage such as a large crack down it or large chunks coming off it the dog parent should trash…I mean discontinue use of the chew. The tiny bits of Nylon breaking off shouldn’t cause much harm to the dog as they will pass through the digestive system easily according to My Benebone1http://www.benebone.com/Product (Nylabone has a similar statement on their products2http://www.nylabone.com/dog-101/chew-style-guide/).

Mugsy seems really fond of putting it against his back teeth and gnawing down. I worry that if he chews too hard on any chew he will hurt his teeth. I hear the doggy dentist is expensive! The Benebone seems soft enough to not damage his teeth too easily, but tough enough to be durable.  It is worth the twelve dollars I paid.

Mugsy enjoys his Benebone, and I like the toy enough to look into buying a peanut butter flavored one. The views expressed in this review belong to me. The Benebone works well for Mugsy, but not every chew is for every dog. A dogs chewing habits should always be monitored.

I purchased my Benebone at the store, as it was during the desperate puppy teething phase. Amazon has it for a fair price at the following Link.
