Not Quite Yet

There is an Indonesian word for this, it is "Belum". I stumbled along this little tid bit of knowledge during a rather trying time in my life. I used to repeat it like a mantra in my head when I felt stressed, or angry. Well not really, I didn't have to be stressed or...

Building up Calm Reactions to Distractions

I can teach Mugsy and Banjo all the cool tricks I want, but if Banjo can't calmly watch a hiker pass us, or a cyclist ride by he isn't going to get the life he deserves. Dogs aren't born to live in a house with occasional access to a fenced yard. Dogs are social...

Unexpected Danger to Your Dogs

Unexpected Danger to Your Dogs

National Pet Fire Safety Awareness Day Applies to everyone because no one expects their home to catch fire. It doesn't really seem like a real danger, not really, not until it happens to them. At least that was the case for my family in November of 2013 when we found...

Training a Rescue Dog

Training a Rescue Dog

Here is the rub: I didn't get a dog so he could spend all day cooped up in a house, and  fenced in a yard. Dogs should get to have adventures and explore the world outside of the house.     Leash manners have been a struggle with Banjo since I brought him home....

Super Star Dog Biscuits

Super Star Dog Biscuits

I thought Super food biscuits  would be one of those treats I made that my dogs merely tolerated receiving as rewards. I even had images of Mugsy my picky eater spitting these treats back out. In reality Banjo was incapable of posing calmly for a picture with...

Double Dog Training

Double Dog Training

Training sessions with two dogs at the same is difficult. Both dogs have to know a really solid "Stay" and separate release commands. There is no way around that. Unless you want to crate one of the dogs, but that isn't really a double dog training session is it? If...

Rainy Days and Stuffed Dog Toys

Rainy Days and Stuffed Dog Toys

There are two type of stuff dog toys. The adorable plush kind, that are essentially like squeaky teddy bears. These might survive moderate chewing, but won't survive a rainy day chew session. Then there are the rubber toys that you can stuff with yummy food, or treats...

How Dogs See a Smile

How Dogs See a Smile

"I looked him in the eyes and smiled at him so he knew it was okay." Someone told me as Banjo enthusiastically dug in to his supper. My snarky response was. "So, you challenged him and bared your teeth?" I was being snarky. The person I was speaking to knew it and...

The Table Scraps Compromise

The Table Scraps Compromise

If Banjo could speak I think our conversations would go something like this: "Oh, A tomato!" he would exclaim eyeing it sitting on the counter. "I love tomatoes, What is a tomato? You should give me one!" I would respond with something like "Can dogs even have...
